Two Cultures Come Together for Love
Marriages are often framed as the coming together of two people, and they are, but they are also about the union of two families and sometimes two (or more) cultures. Danny and Grace brought me on to their July 2025 wedding as a wedding day coordinator to help facilitate their beautifully planned Canadian-Portuguese-Mexican wedding. I was uniquely positioned to be able to serve this wedding and the cultural expectations of all parties because of my own Latin American-Portuguese-Canadian heritage. The overall format of the wedding was in the traditional Canadian style with an afternoon ceremony followed by cocktail hour, dinner service with speeches, and dance. However, touches throughout the event served as opportunities for cultural exchange such as: multilingual speeches, music from all three countries, and the traditional late night seafood buffet that is typical at Portuguese weddings served alongside Mexican tacos, quesadillas, and classic American style pizzas. I translated the day-of schedule for Grace’s Spanish speaking family so that they were able to know exactly what to expect when, and where they had to be. My Spanish speaking skills also came in handy when they had questions and requests for me. Being able to support the hospitality efforts of the couple in culturally specific ways was a true honour and a reminder that though we may have different origin points, common values and love bring us all together.
